At the age of thirteen Charlie Koltak got his first drum set for Christmas. It was the beginning of a lifelong passion. Charlie has shared this joy of making music by performing all over the United States, Canada, and Europe and by teaching students of all ages.
A favorite experience was touring Europe in 2003 as a member of Detroit R&B great Thornetta Davis' band. Charlie was invited back to Italy the following summer to tour with Italian big band leader Joe Castellano and guest singers CharlesWalker and Keisha Jackson (daughter of Mahalia Jackson).
Charlie has performed (sometimes piano, guitar, or vocals) on dozens of recordings by original artists such as Cameron McGill, Cory Chisel and the Wandering Sons, Daniel (Johnson), Judah Johnson, Hayward Williams, Miles Nielsen, Joshua English, Saturday Looks Good to Me, American Mars, and more.
Charlie earned his undergraduate degree in Jazz Studies from Wayne State University in Detroit and later achieved a Masters of Art in Teaching from National Luis University.
Besides continuing to share his love of music by working with UpBeat, Charlie teaches 5th grade at Moos Elementary in Humboldt Park where he also directs the school drum line and performs with the jazz band.
