Started my 5yr old and 8yr old taking piano lessons this fall. The kids have really enjoyed it–especially my 8yr old son who was reluctant to play but now is loving it. Justin and Eric make the instruction fun and enjoyable for both of them. We are excited to keep playing, learning and having fun!

We are really thrilled to have discovered UpBeat for our kids' piano lessons. My kids have shown great progress and really love going. There's a fantastic focus on performing in front of a group which really raises the level of the kids and the community aspect of the school.

The staff is terrific and they're really invested and interested in each kid. UpBeat is definitely a cut above other music schools in Chicago.

Love Scott & his team of teachers! My kids showed no interest in music or piano, but one trial class at UpBeat and they loved it. The teachers are so hands on. It’s a very relaxed and inviting environment for kids to learn music. We’ve been attending for 4 months now and I’m amazed at how much they’ve learned and that they still love going each week.

My son has been taking piano lessons from Scott and his team for over a month now, and his enthusiasm can only be explained by the energy and quality of teaching that UpBeat provides. Scott is easy to work with in scheduling lessons, and his staff is wonderful. They are motivating and professional, and I am so glad we found UpBeat and Scott to work with.

I’m so excited to have this amazing place in the neighborhood! My two children (ages 7 and 9) did a week of music camp at UpBeat this past summer. After the first day of camp, my 7 year old came home and asked us to buy her a piano!  She was hooked! After the week of camp was over (amazing week of camp!), we immediately signed the kids up for weekly classes. They both love the classes and have already learned so much in such a short time. The instructors are amazing!

My 11 year old son and my 10 year old daughter LOVE Upbeat Music.  They have been to camp 2 years in a row for several sessions each summer.  Scott and Justin are so good at not only teaching music but creating a fun supportive environment. Our kids have grown tremendously in their musical skill and their confidence by their participation in this camp.

My 8 year old daughter has been taking piano lessons for about a year with Scott and Justin.  They are really good with kids and make learning fun.  They teach both theory and how to play in a small group lesson.  I like that my daughter gets more time than a standard 30 minute lesson and can learn with her peers too, while focusing on what she needs to do to individually grow as well.  They’ve been good at nurturing and encouraging her talent–even doing a jam session with her during her lesson. She also got to expand her horizons by trying guitar at summer camp, and had lots of fun.

Our second grader began piano lessons at UpBeat only six months ago. Already she had learned a number of songs, excellent hand position, has played at a recital, and absolutely adores going to class! Scott has a way of commanding the children’s respect and admiration because he respects and adores each one of them. Lessons are FUN!

We LOVE Upbeat Music and Arts! My seven-year-old son has been taking guitar here since the fall of 2014, and he has made huge strides in performance and confidence. Justin is an incredibly talented and encouraging teacher. My son looks forward to lessons and always leaves with a huge smile on his face. Lessons are fun, productive, and inspiring, and I appreciate how accommodating they’ve been with changes in our schedule this year. Justin and Scott both connect with kids really well and set high but realistic standards for practice, performance, behavior, and self-respect. I view them not only as teachers, but as role models and mentors for my little guy. Huge recommendation!

My 13 year old son has been taking lessons at UpBeat for almost a year.  He advanced more in two weeks in small group instruction at summer camp than in a year of private lessons.  His summer camp experience was so rewarding he has continued weekly lessons.  The education is excellent, and our experience has been super positive.  There is so much encouragement and support from the instructors as well as the students.  My son is in such a happy place and feels so inspired after every lesson.  Scott, Justin and all of the instructors are amazing.

My 7 year old daughter LOVES taking piano lessons here!  We used to take lessons at Old Town Music, which was also great, but she’s improved so much here.  They’re on the keyboard the whole time (a full hour) and the instruction is strong but done in a fun and gentle way.  On top of that, they’re super encouraging to the kids.  We feel so lucky to have found this gem in the neighborhood!

My 13 year old daughter attended Upbeat Music and Arts camp last summer and she absolutely loved it!  She asked me in January if she was going back this summer because she really loved the camp.  She advanced in playing the guitar and learned how to play the piano through Upbeat pretty quickly.  I appreciate that Upbeat also teaches music theory.  Scott and the staff are amazing with the kids!  Besides being great teachers they also have fun during the day.

BIG BIG fans of Upbeat Music! Our 6 yr old daughter has learned so much from the kind & generous staff there & seriously looks forward to each & every lesson. They convey technique & theory in a way that is super fun for the kids – HIGHEST POSSIBLE recommendation!

I was very impressed by your classes.  The teachers kept a balance of individualizing lessons, hands on and theory with practical ways to understand it. You are a good role model both as a teacher and an adult male.

Bill White Retired CPS Teacher

Both of my sons enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a fantastic introduction to piano!  They accomplished a lot in just one week, and the teachers inspired them greatly.  Having camp for 5 days was wonderful –  it really helped them learn quickly! Having a combination of group and one on one made a huge difference as well.  Over all, my children really loved it. They felt esteemed! At one point they said that they were at camp rock!

Scott has been a “rock star” in the Friends First community-based mentoring program of Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.  Scott volunteered to mentor, not once, but FOUR times in our program!  His ability to connect with youth and to both challenge and affirm his mentees is remarkable.

Scott is the reason why I have such a passion for music and a desire to become a music professional. He is understanding and never gives up and is very patient.

Zach Piano Student

Scott is more than a piano teacher…he’s a musical mentor; a patient, sensitive instructor that gages the needs of the student and crafts a learning program that encourages and develops their talent; and he’s an accomplished and entertaining professional musician to boot!!! He’s truly been a blessing to our family.

Scott has taught piano to 3 of our 5 kids for over 8 years.  After lessons, Scott jams on the piano and our piano players are inspired while the rest of us get to sing along and dance around our living room!!  He really knows how to connect with kids of all ages and makes piano and music fun for them all!

I would highly recommend UpBeat Music Camp for any child/teen. I have known Scott for more than 25 years, and he provided piano instruction to my daughter for ten years.  Scott is exceptionally gifted and talented musically. He has an innate ability to relate to and communicate with young people, and effectively uses humor to put kids at ease.  The comfortable atmosphere he creates facilitates learning.
