Senior Music Instructor & Performance Lead

Fretted Instruments, Violin, & Piano

Thor Vutcharangkul is a musician based in Chicago. Originally from Boston, his initial musical foray came in the form of the violin, performing in youth symphonies at the New England Conservatory. Under the guidance of Charlie Jennison, David Eure, and Mark Carlsen, he soon shifted his focus onto jazz and the upright bass & guitar.

He attended the College of William & Mary, where he studied sitar and Hindustani music under Professor Max Katz. Subsequently, Thor received his MA from the University of Chicago, carrying out graduate research in the fields of education and linguistics.

As an educator, Thor strives to instill a lifelong love of music onto each of his students, promoting a deeper connection to the arts that extend beyond technical aptitude. Music has always been a beacon of light in Thor’s life– he hopes to foster the same sense of pride, joy, and fulfillment in every budding musician!

In his spare time (when not playing music), you can find him working on short films, testing out new recipes in the kitchen, bird-watching, or reading linguistic & anthropology papers.
